How Is Delta-8 Distillate Made?

Delta-8 THC is rapidly growing in popularity, especially Delta-8 distillate. With that popularity come questions about the cannabinoid. Being the fourth most-researched cannabinoid in the world, Delta-8 has been largely suppressed in the United States until recently. While there’s research on the cannabinoid dating all the way back to 1974, it’s only now making its way into the mainstream market.

As Delta-8 continues to make waves, its legal status means it’s widely accessible across the nation. The most common product available is a Delta-8 distillate  — but for the everyday consumer, that may seem like an overwhelming term.

For starters, what is a distillate? And how is a Delta-8 THC distillate made? We answer these questions and more in this comprehensive guide. If you want to learn more about what Delta-8 THC is and how it works, make sure you check our other guides before diving into this one.

What Is a Distillate?

Distillate is a type of extraction where the final product has been essentially stripped of all other materials and compounds except for one. This specific compound is at a potency level of 99% or more, purified of anything other than its concentrated substance.

In the case of Delta-8 distillate, it has an elevated potency of Delta-8 THC that has an even higher concentration than a concentrate might. We take a cannabinoid oil extracted from hemp and, using the distillation process, refine it even further until we have only the compounds we want.

The Difference Between Distillates & Concentrates

Concentrates and distillate cannabis products are growing in popularity, but what is the difference? Concentrates are typically at an 85% or higher THC potency level, while distillates are closer to 99%.

Distillates are a lighter yellow color than concentrates, with considerable transparent clarity. Finally, distillates can be stored in different containers, like cartridges, capsules, or other containers.

How Is Delta-8 Distillate Made?

We have full control over the means of production when using a vertically-integrated operation to make our Eighty Six Delta-8 distillates. Our process starts with the source of Delta-8 — nutrient-rich, pesticide-free, and USA-grown industrial hemp.

Delta-8 is found in only trace amounts no matter the hemp strain, though we do choose ones that are the most abundant in the cannabinoid. Still, the compound takes up less than 1% of the plant’s contents.

If you were to traditionally smoke or vape a hemp bud with such a low quantity of Delta-8 THC, you wouldn’t be able to feel its effects. To produce a substantial amount of the molecule, a specialized distillation process must take place.

We selectively breed certain hemp strains to produce as much Delta-8 in each plant as possible, classified as industrial hemp as they contain less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC. Then, the next step is merely extracting the Delta-8 THC in mass quantities. Since Delta-8 isn’t abundant in any cannabis plant, this means using even larger quantities of the right hemp strains for the job.

Using a thin film distillation process, we’re able to isolate the Delta-8 molecule by utilizing variations in pressure and temperature. This helps us build up a concentration of the appropriate cannabinoid, along with some minor cannabinoids like CBN, CBG, and CBC.

Using this same process for its variations in temperature and pressure, we’re able to convert any Delta-9 THC present into Delta-8 distillate. Through enough hemp, we’re able to extract the Delta-8 THC distillate that goes into each of our cartridges.

Through this process, we’re also able to purify the product and remove any residual impurities, solvent, and any other undesirable compounds. It leaves just the Delta-8 THC compound, a purified cannabinoid that produces a pleasant, uplifting high. While Delta-9 may cause negative symptoms in some people, including paranoia, users report none of these negative side effects with Delta-8.
