The word on the street is out! Our THC-O Disposables Series is a hit! THC-O, a minor cannabinoid with a potency that mirrors very strong cannabis and delivers borderline psychedelic effects, what’s not to love about getting high and triggering a bout of introspection?
Now, you’re probably wondering, with a potency that’s advertised to be three to four times stronger than traditional Delta-9 THC, how exactly would one go about dosing this in a manner that is both safe and effective? Read on to learn everything you need to know about dosing THC-O!
WHAT IS THC-O?
THC-O, or THC-O Acetate is a naturally derived, minor cannabinoid found in hemp. The 2018 Farm Bill federally legalized all plant parts and derivatives from the hemp plant as long as the Delta-9 THC content does not exceed 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Therefore, THC-O is, by all intents and purposes, legal to produce, sell and consume; which is surprising given its incredibly intoxicating properties.
Upon consuming THC-O, users often feel a sense of intense psychoactive properties. Beyond simply being stoned, these effects mirror a borderline psychedelic experience where sights, sounds, and physical sensations are enhanced. Introspection is commonplace and depending on how much THC-O is consumed, experiencing a mild hallucination is not an uncommon occurrence.
HOW IS THC-O MADE?
Despite THC-O being a naturally-derived substance, it is a minor cannabinoid. For the compound to be produced in commercial quantities, it is typically converted from CBD (cannabidiol) through a process of heat and solvents. Here’s how the typical manufacturing process works:
- Hemp-derived CBD is extracted from industrial hemp
- The CBD is then converted into Delta-8 THC through a process involving Supercritical CO2 extraction
- The Delta-8 THC is then combined with acetic anhydride to create the THC-O
What you’re left with is a THC-O Acetate distillate that’s ready to be mixed in with terpenes and flavoring.
IS THC-O SAFE TO CONSUME?
You’re probably wondering that if a minor cannabinoid is hemp-derived, it’s legal. But if the potency is so strong that it mirrors a psychedelic experience, how safe is it to consume?
THC-O is a relatively new cannabinoid to enter into the mainstream hemp industry. Therefore, there is a lack of both research and regulation concerning the compound. Beyond its potency, THC-O is a prodrug, meaning the compound’s effects aren’t realized until it is metabolized by your body – about 20 to 30 minutes after consumption.
This means dosing THC-O in a way that ensures you are consuming enough for its effects to be felt, but not too much that would lead down a spiral of being too high and tripping at the same time.
HOW TO DOSE THC-O
Due to the prodrug nature of THC-O, there is a noticeable delay of its effects upon consumption. While Delta-9 THC varies depending on how it’s consumed – for example, smoking or vaping cannabis would hit you faster than ingesting an edible – THC-O can take between 20 and 30 minutes before its effects are metabolized regardless of what consumption method you choose.
The absolute minimum amount one needs to take for THC-O’s effects to be felt is 0.5MG, or roughly two or three 5-second pulls on your THC-O Disposable.
Following suit with dosing for other psychedelics such as psilocybin “magic mushrooms” or even LSD, your dose can make or break your psychedelic experience. Here’s how a THC-O dosage would work:
- Minimum Dose: 0.5MG, or roughly two to three 5-second pulls
- Standard Psychoactive Dose: 1-3MG, or roughly five 5-second pulls
- Psychedelic Dose: 5MG or more, or roughly five or six 10-second pulls
Keep in mind that other factors such as age, gender, weight, and lifestyle all play a role in determining what an optimal dose is. And since THC-O is a cannabinoid with little to no research behind it, its documentation behind its experience all varies widely on who is taking it and what their life is like. Should someone take too little, effects wouldn’t be experienced. And if someone takes too much, well, that’s a pretty devastating experience to find yourself in.
One surefire piece of advice we can offer is this: dosing is inherently a personalized journey. What would work well for one person might not work for another. Just as if you are dosing Delta-8 THC, start at a lower dosage to find your bearings and if you so choose to increase the potency, slowly do so.
While overconsumption and “overdosing” on traditional Delta-9 THC is possible with little to no detrimental side effects to your overall health, experiencing that with THC-O that is three or four times more potent is a risk worth considering. Then again, there are other forms of psychoactive hemp and cannabis products that have incredibly high concentrations such as dabbing oil, wax, and diamonds – so potentially overdosing on THC-O is all relative to what you are comparing it to.
BE SURE YOU ARE SHOPPING FOR THC-O FROM A TRUSTED BRAND
If you’re interested in giving the THC-O Disposables Series a try, it’s important that you have a proper understanding of what is considered a great brand to trust.
Unfortunately, the psychoactive hemp industry is riddled with brands that claim to have THC-O in their products but really it just contains Delta-8 or Delta-10. Or even worse, the THC-O distillate is contaminated with pesticides, heavy metals, and other unworthy substances that should never be in a finished product.
Stay on the safe side and trust a brand that is transparent with you. All of Eighty Six’s products, whether it’s Delta-8, HHC, or THC-O are all backed by Certificate of Analyses, conducted by a third-party laboratory. The bottom line, whether you choose Eighty Six’s THC-O products or some other company, make sure the products are all tied to a COA. If a brand does have these reports or is not forthcoming with its accessibility, it’s probably wise that you do not pick up their products!
